FUNERAL presents a new body of work developed during a residency at TOU TRYKK in Stavanger.
Kjellesvik arrived at the workshop as a visiting guest, with curiosity and respect for the traditions, etiquette, and working culture of the place. At the same time, he brought his own luggage: materials, images, fragments, and experiences accumulated through earlier journeys, processes, and artistic projects.
In this sense, FUNERAL marks a provisional zero point. A place somewhere between pleasure and grief, departure and arrival, ending and beginning. Through the encounter with the city, the workshop, and its particular conditions, existing material has been unpacked, displaced, reworked, and combined in new ways.
The works begin with photographic fragments that are physically transformed through pigment transfer, monotype, screen printing, and manual interventions. Images are transferred from one surface to another, obscured, interrupted, overprinted, and allowed to reappear in altered form. Layers accumulate, while traces of handling, pressure, failure, and material resistance remain visible.
Rather than treating printmaking as a means of producing fixed or repeatable images, FUNERAL explores the unstable territory between print, surface, image, and object. An imprint may function as representation, as physical evidence of an action, or as something more elusive: a trace of something that has already disappeared.
The working process is deliberately open-ended. Control is introduced and withdrawn. Errors and coincidences are not corrected away but incorporated into the work. The material is allowed to respond, resist, and redirect the process. The images occupy a space between experiment, belief, accident, and representation. External conditions, duration, and chance become active participants in the making of the image.
For Kjellesvik, this offers a way of thinking about the image as something that is not entirely authored in advance. The works emerge through a negotiation between intention and contingency, intuition and structure, control and its temporary loss.
