Brudd brings together two artistic practices that over time have circled different expressions and experiences. Andrea Gjestvang’s photographs and Anders Kjellesvik’s unique prints appear to stem from distinct visual languages and points of departure, yet they are interwoven into a shared narrative of absence, care, and belonging. While Gjestvang directs her gaze outward—toward the consequences of war and insecurity—Kjellesvik turns inward, toward the intimate and the existential: that which breaks, but also endures.
A break can be a wound, an opening, a passage. A shift in life, in the body, in the world. A division between the outer and the inner.
Gjestvang’s photographic series is based on encounters with women in Ukraine—mothers, widows, sisters, and daughters who carry the void of war within their own lives. Through a direct yet sensitive documentary approach, she explores how loss and responsibility shape everyday life in a world where many men are sent to the front, while women struggle to hold together the remnants of a life.
Kjellesvik works with unique prints. The works are grounded in photo-based material that is processed through layers of pigment, print, and manual intervention. The process can mirror longing, dissolution, and irreversibility.
The meeting of the two perspectives—the documentary and the abstract—forms the core of the exhibition. Brudd brings together photography, painting, printmaking, and text in a space where personal and collective narratives reflect one another, with intimacy at the center.
Brudd examines how art can encompass both the individual and the collective, and how personal experience can mirror broader societal themes. In the tension between the poetic and the political, a shared language emerges—one that approaches life’s vulnerability and human resilience.
